EUR/USD dips to around 1.1650 as Middle East tensions boost the US Dollar

EUR/USD experiences slight declines around 1.1655 during the early Asian session on Thursday. Officials from Iran have stated that peace negotiations would be deemed ‘unreasonable’ in light of Israel’s increased military actions in Lebanon. Market participants increase expectations for ECB rate hikes in response to rising oil prices. The EUR/USD pair is experiencing slight declines, currently positioned at 1.1655 in the early Asian trading session on Thursday. The Euro experiences a decline against the US Dollar as uncertainty looms over the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

On Thursday, Reuters indicated that intermittent clashes persisted in the Middle East, notably in Lebanon. Iran officials characterized that as a breach of the newly established ceasefire, indicating that it would be “unreasonable” to continue discussions aimed at establishing a lasting peace agreement with the United States. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East may bolster demand for a safe-haven currency like the Greenback. The March US Consumer Price Index inflation report will be a focal point later on Friday.

The headline CPI is projected to increase by 3.3% year-over-year in March, compared to the previous 2.4%, influenced by the spike in oil prices stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. Any indications of rising inflation in the US may strengthen the Greenback and pose challenges for the major pair in the short term. The assertive stance of the European Central Bank may serve to mitigate the declines of the shared currency. ECB policymakers, including Pierre Wunsch and Dimitar Radev, indicated that an interest rate hike at the April meeting remains a viable option, although a June adjustment is perceived by many officials as more probable.

Market participants have increased their positions, with current pricing reflecting expectations for two rate hikes and over a 50% probability of a third adjustment by December, as reported by Reuters. That represents a significant shift from prior to the conflict, when the concern was a reduction this year.
