The EUR/USD pair is experiencing an upward movement as market participants look forward to the forthcoming interest rate decision from the European Central Bank. The ECB is anticipated to maintain its deposit rate at 2.25%, directing market attention towards Christine Lagarde’s forthcoming conference. The US Dollar encounters pressure as traders assess the implications of renewed inflation driven by escalating energy costs in the context of a deteriorating domestic economic environment. EUR/USD extends its gains for the second consecutive day, trading around 1.1410 during the Asian hours on Thursday. The pair gains ground as the Euro finds solid support ahead of the European Central Bank’s upcoming interest rate decision.

The ECB is anticipated to maintain its deposit facility rate at 2.25%, directing market attention towards ECB President Christine Lagarde’s forthcoming press conference for insights into future monetary policy. The US Dollar faces downward pressure as traders weigh renewed inflation concerns, triggered by surging energy costs, against a softening US economic backdrop. While markets broadly expect the Federal Reserve to leave interest rates unchanged at its upcoming meeting, shifting policy expectations and unclear guidance from new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh have introduced an additional layer of uncertainty to the Dollar’s long-term outlook.

However, the downside of the Greenback could be mitigated by safe-haven demand, as tensions in the Middle East continue to attract attention. Tensions escalated sharply following a threat from US President Donald Trump to target Iranian infrastructure should Tehran attack vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iran pledged immediate retaliation against energy assets associated with the United States throughout the region.

Iran-backed Houthi militants executed missile and drone assaults targeting two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. The assault signifies the inaugural direct attacks on tankers within the waterway, jeopardising a crucial alternative export route for Saudi crude and introducing a perilous new dimension to the conflict.
