AUD dipped as the PBOC left its one-year and five-year Loan Prime Rates unchanged on Tuesday. Hawkish remarks from the RBA regarding the increase in neutral rates maintain the possibility of future interest rate hikes in Australia. The CME FedWatch Tool indicates that the markets anticipate the Federal Reserve will maintain its current stance in October, with an 82.8% probability assigned to a potential rate increase in December. AUD/USD experiences a slight decline following two consecutive days of increases, currently trading near 0.6970 during the Asian trading session on Tuesday.
The currency pair remains subdued as the Australian Dollar holds its losses following the latest interest rate announcement from the People’s Bank of China. On Tuesday, China’s central bank opted to maintain its benchmark Loan Prime Rates, keeping the one-year LPR at 3.00% and the five-year LPR at 3.50%. However, the Australian Dollar may find support following assertive remarks from a senior central bank official. Reserve Bank of Australia Assistant Governor Christopher Kent raised concerns regarding the sufficiency of current interest rates, highlighting indications that neutral interest rates are on the rise both domestically and globally.
RBA’s Kent indicated that a higher neutral rate might imply that the existing 4.6% cash rate is applying less downward pressure on demand and inflation than previously expected, thereby leaving the possibility for future rate increases open. Investors are currently anticipating RBA Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser’s forthcoming speech this week for additional insights into the monetary policy trajectory. Meanwhile, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh conveyed a positive outlook on the robustness of the US economy last week, although he did not indicate the timing or likelihood of any forthcoming rate hikes.
According to the CME FedWatch tool, fed funds futures traders anticipate that the Federal Reserve will maintain interest rates at their current levels during the October policy meeting, while assigning an 82.8% probability to a potential rate hike in December. Analysts note that the “USD is mixed to a little softer on the session as markets continue to reconsider near-term Fed tightening expectations,” with recent Fed communication leading investors to reduce the probability of immediate policy adjustments.
