USD/CHF Falls to 0.8170 as Dollar Weakness Supports Franc

The USD/CHF pair experiences depreciation as the US Dollar shows signs of weakness following the Democrats’ acquisition of a majority in the US House. Increased geopolitical risks stemming from US-Iran tensions, coupled with the possibility of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike, are contributing to volatility in the USD market. Rising Swiss inflation to 1.5% fuels expectations of an earlier SNB rate hike by 2027. USD/CHF has relinquished its recent advances from the prior day, currently trading at approximately 0.8170 during the Asian session on Wednesday. The currency pair is experiencing downward pressure as the US Dollar weakens. This decline follows the midterm elections on Tuesday, during which Americans cast their votes to establish control of Congress for the remaining two years of President Donald Trump’s term.

With the Democrats securing a majority in the House of Representatives from the Republicans, markets are anticipating potential shifts in congressional leadership and fresh uncertainty regarding the future path of US fiscal policy. Data indicates that results have been called in 253 of the 435 House seats, with Democrats securing 152 seats compared to Republicans’ 101 in the pursuit of the 218 required for a majority. In addition to political developments, financial markets are paying close attention to geopolitical tensions and indicators of monetary policy. Traders are assessing the likelihood of President Trump reinstating military strikes against Iran, given the current impasse in diplomatic negotiations.

Both Washington and Tehran are presently evaluating proposals from mediators in the wake of reported US airstrikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island. While reduced energy costs may moderate anticipations for stringent monetary policy measures, the CME FedWatch Tool suggests that market participants continue to assign a 79% likelihood to a Federal Reserve interest rate increase in December. Compounding the pressure on the USD/CHF pair is the strength of the Swiss Franc, which has received domestic support following recent inflation data. Switzerland’s inflation surged to a near three-year peak of 1.5% in October, primarily fuelled by escalating costs associated with imported energy.

Despite this figure staying within the Swiss National Bank’s target range of 0% to 2%, the abrupt increase has prompted market participants to anticipate an earlier rate hike, with expectations now indicating a potential move in early 2027. Strategists note that the recent volatility in USD/CHF has persisted, with the “USD subsequently dropped to a low of 0.8148 and then snapped back up to close at 0.8206 (+0.27%).” They add that the Dollar “fell further today and it could break below 0.8140. However, it is unclear whether it can maintain a foothold below this level,” underscoring lingering uncertainty around the pair’s ability to sustain a move beneath key support.
